The Gut Campaign
About the Gut Conservation Area
The Gut Conservation Area is a 162 ha site located eleven kilometers east of Apsley on concession 1, in the extreme northern corner of Lake Township, County of Hastings.
The land is rugged with many outcrops of Precambrian rocks interspersed with dense bush and a mixed hardwood forest. It encompasses a prominent geological feature, known locally as the “Gut” which is a large gorge and waterfall through which the Crowe River flows for about 230 meters. The fissure that forms the gorge is over 30 meters in width. The gorge presents a breath taking glimpse of this unique terrain.
The Gut Conservation Area was purchased to create a public open space area which would preserve and protect this important feature of the Crowe River Watershed. The area is unique to the watershed and its rugged scenic beauty is unmatched in eastern Ontario
Have you ever wondered where the funds come from to maintain our local Crowe Valley Conservation Authority recreational trails? It’s easy – through donations and support from organizations and people like you!
Our goal is to raise $7500 to purchase materials to complete the restoration of the stairs, railing and new outhouse at The Gut Conservation Area.
To date the Gut Campaign grew to $4,620.63 which was used to purchase building material. On June 3rd and 5th, 2015, Mike Sherwin’s Norwood High School Forestry class attended The Gut C.A. and built a new washroom and finished the restoration of the trail stairs.
We still have about 38% of our goal left to raise which will provide the directional signage along the trails, repair the railings at the look-out point and the finishing touches to the washroom.
The success of these initiatives relies solely on the charitable in-kind and monetary donations from you, our understanding watershed residents.
